Barwell Motorsport, British GT Team champions for 2015, have recently announced that , for all major domestic and international programmes.....
they will be competing with the new Lamborghini Huracán GT3.
The British squad has secured a three-year deal of significant factory support with manufacturer, Lamborghini Squadra Corse, for its programmes with the new car. Additionally, Barwell has entered into a commercial partnership with MP Motorsport, which has enabled it to acquire three of the stunning new Huracáns to use in its GT3 campaigns over the next three years.
The Surrey-based outfit, which has previously won both the British GT Drivers and Teams Championships, will operate under the banner of ‘Barwell Motorsport supported by Lamborghini Squadra Corse’ during the 2016, 2017 and 2018 seasons. The use of this official title is exclusive to Barwell in the British GT Championship and other domestic-based series.
Since 2012 Barwell has enjoyed extensive success with its BMW Z4s in British GT, the Blancpain Endurance Series and the European Le Mans Series, most notably in 2014 when its Ecurie Ecosse entered car won the British GT crown (with Marco Attard) and finished third in the Blancpain Pro-Am Championship. The Ecurie Ecosse machine has also claimed Pro-Am podium finishes in the last two Spa 24 Hour races. The Z4 has served the team well, but with it now reaching the end of its life as a current GT3 model, Barwell had to move to a ‘new generation’ GT3 car for the future. The Huracán GT3 made a stunning entrance into the GT3 scene in 2015 when it won overall on its debut in the Blancpain Endurance Series season-opener at Monza, and thus is already a proven winner in the toughest GT3 arena of them all. With aerodynamics developed by Dallara, the powerful and low-drag Huracán is an ideal all-round contender for the different challenges thrown up by the UK domestic and international series race circuits.
Next year Barwell will field two of its Lamborghinis in the British GT Championship, and is also again planning on mounting challenges in the Blancpain Endurance Series and European Le Mans Series. Prior to that the team will be carrying out an extensive testing programme in both the UK and Europe.
Mark Lemmer, Barwell Motorsport MD: “We are delighted to announce our plans with the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 from 2016 onwards. To have secured a three year deal with factory support from such an iconic brand, with its rich sports car heritage is exactly what we need going forward. We share common goals in our pursuit of winning national and international race series as well as targeting victories in the blue chip endurance races, and both parties are highly motivated in our quest for success. I have no doubt that the Huracán GT3 is the right tool for the job and we are very much looking forward to building a strong working relationship with Lamborghini Squadra Corse.”
Mark Poole, MP Motorsport: “I’m delighted to renew my partnership with Barwell Motorsport, and I’m really looking forward to competing with the new Huracán GT3 over the next few seasons.”
Giorgio Sanna, Head of Motorsport, Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.: “As Lamborghini Squadra Corse we are glad to announce the partnership with Barwell Motorsport in the GT3 programme. We consider it strategic in the British GT Championship where we want to show the performance of the Huracán GT3, and of course to be a protagonist with Barwell in the key international GT series. ”
